Kael's Wish for a Hideout

Meet Kael, an active nine-year-old from Frankville, Ontario. As you watch him run around and play with his siblings, you would never believe that he has endured more battles than most children his age. Kael was diagnosed with a rare immune deficiency disorder when he was five years old, and went on to miss two full years of school as he received treatment and underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant surgery. Kael endured a long road to recovery; in fact, at one point he even had to spend six months in isolation to avoid the risk of infection as he recovered.

Kael was very excited to learn that Make-A-Wish® Eastern Ontario would be granting his one true wish. Having grown up on his family’s dairy farm, he spends a lot of time outdoors and always wanted a treehouse or clubhouse of his own to share with his siblings. Make-A-Wish® and Kael’s wish granters reached out to Calgary's Charmed Playhouses, a company that specializes in wooden playhouses for kids, and they got to work on creating a kid-friendly cabin for Kael. The playhouse — completely customized to Kael’s tastes — travelled all the way from Calgary to arrive at the family home, where loved ones gathered for the big reveal.

“The look on Kael’s face when he saw his playhouse for the first time was so special,” says Tanya Desjardins, CEO, Make-A-Wish Eastern Ontario. “We were able to decorate the house with his favourite colour, orange, and incorporate items to truly make the house a personal place for Kael to play and relax with friends and family. Oh yes, and it also has a slide!”

Kael’s family is thrilled to have his playhouse on the property. “The kids are enjoying countless hours each day playing, planning and connecting like children should,” says Kael’s mother, Emily. “His wish went beyond just a tangible item that he could look forward to, it was about having a childhood, spending time with his best friends (his siblings) and having a place he could 'escape' to. Dealing with an illness means a world of procedures and complications all out of your control - this wish gives him back some control and adds adventure to his once dreary days. The best part about having a cool clubhouse is the company you share it with. We are sure that many memories will be made in the ‘Hideout’.”

When a wish is granted, it does much more than bring joy to a child’s heart. For kids like Kael, who are faced with life-threatening medical conditions, a wish-come-true provides them with strength to battle through darkness and gives them hope for healthier, happier days ahead.
